Adult, Youth and Family Classes (age 13 and up) meet on Monday and Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. This is the complete Via Potentia conditioning and self defense curriculum.
Children's Classes (ages 7 - 13) meet Monday and Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:00 PM. Parents may participate and assist in these classes (and may be asked to do so for very young or immature children).
Open Gym runs on Fridays of every week from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. The gym is open for personal practice, sparring, and personalized instructor assistance. Any currently enrolled student may participate for free, and may bring a guest. Other drop-ins are $5. Optional First Aid, CPR and Gun Safety topics are sometimes offered during the first hour.
The Free Public Seminar on physical conditioning and self defense is held during the open gym on the last Friday of each month (6-9 PM). Bring a friend or family member, wear comfortable clothes.
New terms start each January, April, July and October. It is best to start at the beginning of the month, but it is okay to start late; we'll help you catch up. The standard tuition is $180 for a three-month term (that's only about $2 per day). Uniforms are optional for the first year. Sparring gear is needed only for those who wish to do contact sparring. Generous discounts are available for family members and referrals. Need-based scholarships are also available.
Our techniques and exercises include comprehensive sparring and grappling, heavy bag striking, partner drills, dynamic stretching, static/isometric stretching, calisthenics, stick fighting, forms and board breaking. The fighting techniques are designed to address real assault situations, and the physical conditioning portion was developed over years of research and in consultation with various physical therapists.
Our atmosphere is challenging, but accomodating. We aren't your "masters," but work together as respectful friends. We will work with you, at your pace, to help you develop good conditioning and self defense skills.
Classes are taught by experienced, skilled instructors who also know First Aid, CPR and AED use. A full First Aid kit and AED are on site.
To get started call, email, or drop by the gym before class (wear clothes that will be comfortable for exercise). You may also want to go through our free public seminar first. It is up to you.
College credit (PE) is available if you sign up through Chemeketa Community College. Look for the "Personal Protection" class listing, PE185PA.
